IT Management Hierarchy

IT management is a fervent and an overt discipline where all the technical resources of an organization are managed by management professionals in accordance with the organization’s priorities and needs. Such resources incorporate computer software, hardware, data, data centre facilities and networks along with the staff who are appointed to maintain these resources.

The IT management hierarchy pertains to the composition of the IT based organization in terms of the major designation levels. The general IT management hierarchy is described in brief as below in this article with a little description in a manner of ladder with the top most level at the top and ending with the lowest:

Administrative or Top Level IT Management

  • Chief IT Officer or IT Director
  • IT Scientist

Executive or Middle Level IT Management

  • IT Project Manager
  • IT Administrator / IT Analysts

Supervisory or Lower Level IT Management

  • IT Engineer
  • IT Trainee/ Assistant

Administrative or Top Level IT Management

The highest level of the IT management hierarchy is the administrative level. The major job duties include management of business operations including important decision making for the organization.

  • Chief IT Officer or IT Director – A chief information technology officer, CTO is responsible for articulating the organization’s technical objectives. These are responsible for overall management of the technical functions and for enhancing their alignment with the company’s overall objectives.
  • IT Scientist – The next rank in the IT management hierarchy is computer scientist, an expectant experienced scientist who has acquired through knowledge of IT science – a study of theoretical base of information and computation.

Executive or Middle Level IT Management

Executive management also referred as senior management is the middle level of the IT management hierarchy. This level includes a team of individuals at the highest level of organizational management who have the day-to-day responsibilities of managing a company or corporation.

  • IT Project Manager – IT project manager is a professional responsible for managing the resources of all the technical projects of a company. They are in charges of particular projects and supervise the entire project development life cycle.
  • IT Administrator / IT Analysts – IT administrators are also referred as IT analysts. IT administrators are responsible for streamlining the network and computer systems environment as required by the organization for the implementation of organizational tasks in the most effective manner.

Supervisory or Lower Level IT Management

This is the lowest level in the IT management hierarchy. It includes following ranks.

  • IT Engineer – An ardent practitioner of information technology engineering is IT engineer.. They play a vital role in the IT career hierarchy. These are professionals with exquisite experience in a specific IT technology and are hired to perform their specification oriented tasks.
  • IT Trainee/ Assistant – An IT trainee is an individual seeking a training program within an organization after completing IT study from a college or university. This is the lowest rank in the IT career hierarchy.
