Police Hierarchy in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Police Service is normally referred as Sri Lanka Police, an exquisite national police force of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka police force has total of manpower of more than about 85,000, all working for maintaining and enforcing law & order in the town, enhancing public safety and maintaining peace throughout the Sri Lanka. The highest rank of Sri Lanka police is IGP, Inspector General of Police that reports directly to minister of defense.

In this article, the police ranks are categorized in an ardent hierarchy so as to make it easy to understand and to memorize covetously. The hierarchy is from top to bottom means the rank hierarchy starts from the highest rank and ends with the lowest rank available in the Sri Lanka Police hierarchy.

The hierarchy is broadly divided into two categories via Gazetted officers, high level officers and Non – Gazetted officers, lower level officers. Further these categories consist of many ranks which are also arranged in a proper top to bottom sequence. The rank names are provided in a proper ladder with a brief description of the rank. Let us now take a quick look.

Gazetted Officers

This category is further of two types, Senior Gazetted Officers and Junior Gazetted Officers.

Senior Gazetted Officers

There are total of six ranks in this job title which are explained as below:

Inspector General of Police – Abbreviated as IGP, the highest police rank present in Sri Lanka. The current IGP is N.K. Illagakoon.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police – Abbreviated as SDIG, subordinate to IGP.

Deputy Inspector General of Police – Abbreviated as DIG, a high level gazetted officer rank.

Senior Superintendent of Police – Abbreviated as SSP, every district is supervised by an SSP.

Superintendent of Police – Abbreviated as SP, this rank is in command in absence of an SSP.

Assistant Superintendent of Police – Abbreviated as ASP, a mid level gazetted officer rank.

Junior Gazetted Officers

This category of gazetted officers further consists of three ranks which are:

Chief Inspector Of Police – Abbreviated as CIP, a lower level gazetted officer rank.

Inspector of Police – Abbreviated as IP, every city is supervised by an IP.

Sub Inspector of Police – Abbreviated as SI, the lowest level gazetted officer rank.

Non – Gazetted Officers

Police Sergeant Major – Abbreviated as PSM

Police Sergeant Class 1 PS – Abbreviated as PS

Police Sergeant Class 2 PS – Abbreviated as PS

Police Constable Class 1 PC – Abbreviated as PC

Police Constable Class 2 PC – Abbreviated as PC

Police Constable Class 3 PC – Abbreviated as PC

Police Constable Class 4 PC – Abbreviated as PC

 

This composition of hierarchy got its current form by the changes carried out in 19th century. So this hierarchy amorously explains the ranks of Sri Lanka police force arranged in a proper sequence
