Nehru Family Hierarchy

The Nehru family is an important and well known name in the Indian political history.  Its political involvement has mainly been seen around the Indian National Congress and many individuals of the family have administered over the Congress political party since the independence of India.

The Nehru family is also often referred to as the Nehru-Gandhi family since the Gandhi family name was derived from Feroze Gandhi whom Indira Priyadarshini Nehru got married to and thendecided to change her name. Right from the very beginning, the Nehru family has been popular but many still get confused about its hierarchy or family tree structure.   • Gangadhar Nehru

Gangadhar Nehru was an Indian police official who remained at the position of Delhi’s last Kotwal of Delhi before the famous rebellion of the year 1857.   His son was Motilal Nehru who was a freedom fighter.  Gangadhar Nehru’s wife,  Jeorani also belonged to this generation.

Second Generation

  • Bansi Dhar Nehru

He was the eldest son of Gangadhar Nehru and worked with the British government’s judicialwing.  He was partly separated and cut off with the other members of the family as he was appointed on various different positions.

  • Nandlal Nehru

He was Motilal Nehru’s brother and was the Dewan of Khetni which was then a princely state.

  • Motilal Nehru

Motilal Nehru was the patriarch of the family and was a lawyer by profession. He was a prominent figure in the Indian Independence movement and also served in the Congress as President twice.

  • Swarup Rani Nehru

She was Motilal Nehru’s wife and became was an active participant of the Independence movement of the country when both her son and her husband were put behind bars by the British.

  • Jawaharlal Nehru 

Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first everPrime Minister and was also one of the most integral leaders in the Indian Independence fight.
